Exhibition at Modemuseum Hasselt

The Story of Bivolino
Modemuseum Hasselt
21.05.2016
30.06.2016

As curator of ‘The Story of Bivolino’  at Modemuseum Hasselt,  my objective was to reveal the history of Bivolino and highlight the company’s natural relationship with the textile industry and fashion history of Hasselt.

The exhibition looked into the story of the two brothers Louis and Jacques Byvoet who founded the business in 1954 and their grandfather who had been in the linen trade since 1900. The family run business offered customers an alternative to the classic white shirt and delivered fashionable styles and fabrics. The logo, always featuring the squirrel has been handed down through the generations and arose from the location of the brothers’ workshops close to the sandy pine forests of Hasselt. The company has continually adopted advancing technologies and pioneered the ergonomic measurement system in 1969, allowing each shirt to be individually fitted to the body.
‘The Story of Bivolino’ presented an archive collection of objects, photographs as well as artwork and bespoke shirts from the business and art ranges, accompanied by digital and slide presentations.

Drawing Project in association with The Department of Classics, Trinity College Dublin

During 2015/16 Mieke Vanmechelen completed a series of drawings for a research project which was supported by the Thomas Dammann Junior Memorial Trust Award. The drawings formed the principal visual element to an important academic thesis. The project allowed an opportunity to link up with the Classics Department at Trinity College Dublin where Mieke originally studied Classical Civilisation and Philosophy. The resulting drawings and paintings enhanced the explanatory power of the thesis and contributed to this previously undocumented part of our cultural, economic and political heritage.
