The Death of Queen Scotia, 6 mins 26 secs, HD, colour, looped with sound
The Death of Queen Scotia is a collaboration by poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin artist Mieke Vanmechelen and composer Ian Wilson, marking their shared time on the Kerry Residency Panel. The work is borne from a poem by Ní Churreáin of the same title. According to legend Queen Scotia of the Milesians was a pharaoh’s daughter who came to Tralee in Kerry to avenge the death of her husband. An underlying connection is made with The Rose of Tralee International Festival, an event held annually to select a young woman to be crowned the Rose.Exploring issues of female power and grief, the work is sensual in its evocation of tenderness, love, loss and pragmatic resolve.
